Arms Race 2: The Weapon Tree Family Tree

So, this isn’t an entirely finished article, but perhaps you, the reader can help, with the missing information (Mainly just Mold numbers for the trees), if you do, you can join the Paragon of Virtue that is “Guys who helped the Attica Gazette”

A while back I wound up with a G.I. Joe accessory tree, and with the impending doom of Yo Joe! I figured I’d do a bit of a reference article on them. For opinions, cool pictures, and a likely far more enjoyable read, check out this article over at the Dragon Fortress.

The gist of this article, is to list the many trees, what they contained, what colours they were released in, and with whom they were released. Until I read the aforementioned Dragon Fortress article, I honestly thought the majority of the weapon trees were unique to each figure, so I was quite surprised when I found out, that wasn’t the case.

Thanks goes out to Dragon Fortress for encouragement, a few random eBay auctions that had photos where I could determine the mold numbers.

I got few pictures and mold #’s from:

NINJA FORCE WEAPON TREES

Ninja Force, and the Street Fighter 2 series of figures had their own batch of weapons trees. This makes sense, because Duke v5 isn’t going to be coming with nunchucks. They don’t have the #M- markings that the Battle Corps/Mega Marines/Star Brigade figures do. C’est le vie.

Notes Of Interest

There appears to be some method to the madness when it comes to the Mold #’s used for the various subsets that made up the G.I. Joe line in 1993 and 1994. If it’s a tree that originated for Battle Corps there’s usually an “M#” as a prefix to the number. Star Brigade doesn’t tend to have those for the unique to Star Brigade trees, though that could also be conjecture.

The 1994 Dial Tone weapons tree features two distinct numbers on it’s identifier. This is the only one I’ve seen, though I haven’t seen many.

Armor Tech trees featured variations on the handles of the trees, because the figures didn’t have the typical grips, so they couldn’t share weapons. This is interesting as the Star Brigade Countdown and Armor Tech Duke originating trees are the same group of weapons.

  1. Mike T. says:

There’s also a difference between the Chinese and Malaysian trees. Notably, the Hit and Run rifle tree is available with an open trigger guard or a closed trigger guard. I’ll have to look at some of my numbers to see what I have. I’ve got a bunch of weapons still on the tree.

Also, there’s that weird mail in set of trees that feature various weapons. Not sure if they are the same as those that come with some figures. And, I’m too lazy to look it up right now.

The 2002 figures that reused 1994 molds included the same weapons as were included on the original trees, but they were separated. So, I don’t know if the trees still existed and the weapons were removed or if they made all new weapon molds. Both are equally odd as they would have cost Hasbro money that they didn’t invest in the line.

    • A-Man says:

The 1993 mail offer collector’s kit with Hooded CC “mystery figure” included some weapons trees. Not sure what they were, I never sent off for it and yojoe’s info is lacking.

I suspect the weapons trees still existed for those figures.

      • generalliederkranz says:

From what I’ve seen online, the Hooded CC mail-order trees were black versions of the 93/94 Night Creeper Leader tree. (But for all I know there could be more than this one, or variations of it.) I wish I’d ordered that set, since the black versions of 91 Snake Eyes’s swords would be useful.

I’ve never had any accessories for the 2002 ARAHC Wave 5, but a question for those of you who have: are they the same soft, bendy, shiny plastic as Hasbro used in 1993-1994? Or are they hard dull plastic like the rest of the ARAHC line?
